about

Beatology Volume 1 is the first installment in a three volume set that explores 31 variations of a funk beat. In the type of funk beat on which these beats are based, you’d expect the kick drums to strike on or around the 1st and 3rd beats, and the snares to hit on or around the 2nd and 4th beats. But what if they didn’t? What if the whole beat structure was shifted an eighth note or sixteenth note forwards or backwards in time? Would you still perceive the snares to be on the 2nd and 4th beats even though they are not?

The new musical possibilities created by playing with the actual and perceived location of kicks and snares in time is what Beatology explores. Melodic and harmonic instruments outline the pulse giving a context for the manifold rhythmic permutations of the drums.

The basic drum parts of each section of beats in every track were played live on various percussion instruments to insure a vital swing.

Featured instruments include accordion, analog synths, bass, dholak, digital synths, drum kit, drum synths, electric guitar, kalimba, likembe, nylon string guitar, sarod, steel string guitar, tabla.

Composed, performed, produced, recorded and mixed by James Whetzel.
