about

Whetzel Mixes is new release by Whetzel of remixes of music from four releases: Whetzel’s 2020 release Matilda Beats, his 2018 release Charlie Beats, his 2016 release Beatology Volume 1, and James Whetzel’s 2020 release Lullabies, Beats, and Baby Melodies.

Remixes were created by Nogymx, Scntfc, Geamat, Subatomic Sound System, and WD4D.

Here's some Information about the individual remixers and their tracks:

1) Dreams of Victorialand (Nogymx Remix)

Nogymx is an Irish born, South Korea based, producer of laid back Asian-influenced instrumental hip hop. His lo-fi hip hop music references the musical layers of downtempo and the subtle textures of jazz.

Dreams of Victorialand is a tune from Matilda Beats, and Nogymx’s remix is a lovely instrumental hip hop and downtempo influenced remix which recalls the sounds of Emancipator, Bonobo, and RJD2.

There is a video for this track. You can watch it as landscape or portrait on YouTube.

2) Once Upon a Time (Scntfc Remix)

Scntfc first made his musical mark as the drummer for Hush Harbor, a Seattle Indie-Rock band. He quickly switched to being a producer of instrumental hip hop and electronic music, releasing his first albums under the name Scientific American. He has composed music for several commercials and has made remixes for Modest Mouse, 764-Hero, and Red Star Theory. In the last decade he has been creating music for video games including the award winning game “Oxenfree,” which was released in 2016.

Once Upon a Time is from Matilda Beats, and Scntfc’s remix is a lush and emotional take of the original with layers of over-saturated synthesizers. Hearing this remix for the first time made brought tears to the eyes of James Whetzel and his wife, it is so beautiful. The track sounds most akin to something produced by Aphex Twin, if Aphex Twin played sarod and mandolin.

3) Dreams of Victorialand (Geamat Remix)

Geamat is a neo-afro-soul multi-instrumentalist producer based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Geamat’s remix of Dreams of Victorialand takes the tune into an African club. The remix is faster than the original, and percussive bell and shaker parts increase the danceable energy. Gentle Rhodes parts embellish and harmonize the melodies, heavy synth bass and punchy drums make the beat complete.

4) You’re Real Cool (Subatomic Sound System Remix)

Subatomic Sound System are a live dub & bass sound system based in New York City. They are known for their work with Lee "Scratch" Perry, with whom they have toured around the world—recreating the sound of the Black Ark studio live on stage. They performed with Perry at Coachella in 2013. And in 2017 they released “Super Ape Returns to Conquer” which was a brand new complete remake and full bass frequency update of Perry’s classic “Super Ape” album. Subatomic Sound system is led by producer, DJ and musician Emch, who is the remixer of this track.

You’re Real Cool is a track from James Whetzel’s Lullabies, Beats, and Baby Melodies. Subatomic Sound Systems’s remix adds in new guitar parts and brings out the latent Afro-Beat vibrations in the track with powerful bass.

5) Night Drive (Geamat Remix)

Night Drive is a tune from Charlie Beats. Geamat describes his remix of it thus: “Unlimited streaming of Energy, constant drop on the kick drums, Afro spiritual soul, one hears the sound of a musician engaging in a conversation with the universe in an effort to grasp the true origins of universal harmony. There was so much happening on Night Drive.” All that, and it’s ready to start a dance party! By the way the words that Geamat is singing in the background of the track are: “I’ve been chilling. You know the feeling.” These words are believed to be a reference to all the mandatory “chilling” Geamat—and the rest of us—have been doing while under lockdown from COVID-19.

6) Moving Forward (WD4D Remix)

WD4D is a Seattle based artist who blends futuristic hip hop and soul with electronic possibilities.

Moving Forward appears on Beatology Volume 1. WD4D’s remix of Moving Forward takes what was a meditative piece of instrumental hip hop that played at 62 BPM, doubles the tempo and turns it into a body-rocking club track. If you listen carefully you can hear this remix sweat.

7) You’re Real Cool (Subatomic Sound System Dub Mix)

This is the dub version mix, wherein Subatomic strips the tune down to its basic bits, rebuilds it, and brings it to the dancehall.

8) Moving Forward (Nogymx Remix)

In this remix Nogymx chops and deconstructs the original, speeds it up from 62 BPM to 88 BPM, and then rebuilds it into a new piece of lo-fi instrumental hip hop. As Nogymx describes it: “I took the sampling to a bit of an extreme and cut up the original sample to create a completely new melody whilst also introducing a top Kalimba melody with hard-hitting drums to drive the track forward. I like to play with the titles of tracks so like with the dreamy vibes of the first, I tried to catch the "ever-moving" mood of this remix. The track runs from start to finish with the same dancing kalimba melody and chopped up original sample whilst also introducing new samples from the original as well as new instruments such as the Shakuhachi, and violin-like synth.”
