Free Chocolate at Bauhaus

from Palm Wine Instrumentals by Who Is John Smith

about

I used to live right nearby Bauhaus in my first apartment on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Bauhaus was a super cool, but also welcoming place. There was a big photo of Gropius located above where all the coffee was served. It had big glass windows and seats where you could sit outside and watch people pass by as you chatted with your friends. Back in the 90s you could smoke on the top level, where lots of people would study. You would get a free piece of chocolate when you ordered a mocha at there. I once was waiting inside Bauhaus and I looked up at the photo of Gropius as "Bela Lugosi's Dead" was playing in the background--the apotheosis! Now Bauhaus is no more. The Capitol Hill location was developed into condos and new retail, and their other locations around town also closed their doors. I still have the memories though, and now some music in which to enshrine them.
